HISTORY OF LOCAL GREEKS
Local Greeks are among the oldest organizations on the SUNY Oswego campus and were formed during the earlier part of the century at a time of progressive social development.
Most of the local fraternities and sororities on the SUNY Oswego campus were originally regional or national organizations, consisting of other chapters across the US or New York State. In 1954 a decree was passed down through the New York State Board of Trustees forbidding national organizations on the SUNY Oswego campus, as well as other SUNY campuses.
In accordance with this new law they had to break their ties with nationals and truly became local Greek organizations and have since grown and prospered. |
